Madeline (Furlong) O’CALLAGHAN

Mary Madeline, or Madeline, as she was known, “Babe”’s elder daughter, was born 14th January 1892.  She was the oldest of Timothy O’CALLAGHAN’s grandchildren to survive into adulthood.

A year after her mother “Babe”’s death, Madeline married Eugene “Gene” O’CALLAGHAN (no known relation), a painter (decorator) on 28th July 1931. She was 39-years-old.

There are no births recorded for this couple, confirming my Uncle Jack Hyland’s comment that they did not have children. They did reportedly raise Madeline’s sister’s daughter as their own.[1]

The couple lived in Madeline’s family home, next door to the DAVIS family, at 94 Wolfetone St.

Eugene died 26 January 1964.  He was survived by Madeline, and I have not been able to establish when she died, suggesting she lived beyond current record availability (1969).

[1] One of Walter’s daughters told her nephew that Mairead, daughter of Kitty was adopted by Madeline and Eugene and raised as their child.  Mairead lived in Blackpool.
