Walter Furlong timeline

Walter ran a tailoring business, was involved in local associations, and was politically active for years, combining national and local representation.  The evidence suggests he was a man of passionate principles.   Whatever lens we may have on his actions and politics we can see Walter gave enormous service to his city and country over his lifetime.

  1. I have previously reported that my wife and I took my grandfather, George Francis Davis, in May 1971 from South Wales back to Cork to see his elderly remaining family. During our visit we were introduced to Walter Furlong and his wife at their home in Cork. I was at the time unaware that Walter had been so passionate about his people and country. After reading his history compiled by Frances Bird I realise that he was a man of the people for the people. I say this as my first impression of their modest home, not that I was a nosy parker aged 23 years when we met, because owing to his position and status within the community one would have expected a far more modern home . So my conclusion is that he was more concerned about the people he represented than about himself. It was 49 years ago and had I been ware of his political history then perhaps I would have made more of an effort to remember more than I have, with the help of my wife.
I certainly remember that we had a lovely welcome and were taken to Brian’s family home outside Cork City where we had a memorable tea. I can’t remember the name of the village where he lived but do remember him saying that he worked at the docks in Cork.
I have cetainly enjoyed reading Frances’s report even when I have had a tear in my eye as to what some of my relations have had to endure, past life has certainly been difficult on both sides of the Irish Sea.
