John Joseph was born 14 July 1866 at 5 Foleys Row on Watercourse, Cork city. He was the second son and the third child of John and Mary Teresa (Desmond) EGAN. He was the second son to be given the name John, the first having died aged 9 months less than two years earlier.
John worked as a clerk in post office.
Then living at 9 Shandon Street, he married Mary (Minnie) O’Brien on 15 July 1888 at St. Finbarr’s, Dunbar St, Cork.

Also living at 9 Shandon St. in 1888 was his younger sister Mary Teresa EGAN. She married Patrick HYLAND 24 days after her brother John Joseph’s wedding. My great aunt Mollie HYLAND and grandfather Michael HYLAND were born at 9 Shandon St.
John EGAN migrated to the US on the ship Brittanic from Queenstown, arriving at Ellis Island on 13 May 1892. John’s wife Minnie and sons, William and John, arrived 9 September 1892 on The City of New York from Queenstown.
John Joseph EGAN settled in Chicago, Illinois. He became a US citizen on 27 October 1896.

John Joseph worked as a labourer and then as a clerk for the railroad.
The US censuses show us Minnie’s brother, Daniel O’Brien, a dealer of groceries, also lived with their family.

John Joseph EGAN died 12 July 1939, two days before his 73rd birthday, reportedly of a heart attack (six months after his younger brother, Francis Patrick, died from heart failure back in Cork.) He is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.
Wife Minnie died 15 years later.
John and Minnie had the following children:
