Michael DOOLEY (1872- 1954)

Michael DOOLEY was the son of Patrick and Rosanna (Stapleton) DOOLEY, the nephew of my great, great grandmother Catherine (Dooley) HYLAND.

Michael was born 5 July 1872 and baptised 14 July 1872 in the Maryborough parish. One of his baptismal sponsors was Margaret KEEGAN.

Michael emigrated to Maryland, USA.  He gave the year of immigration as 1892 (his 1900 census record ), 1894 (his 1910 census record ) and 1889, the last being the same year as given by his sister Sarah (her 1930 census record).

In the 1900 census Michael was single and lodging and working as a servant in Bryantown, Charles, Maryland.  He gave his occupation as farmer.  He could read and write and was then still an “alien”.

In the 1910 census Michael was still single and worked as a fireman in St. Agnes hospital, 13 District 2 precinct, run by the Sisters of Mercy. He reported he was by then naturalised.

He married Anne G. CORKRAN (Corcoran), a County Laois born immigrant who arrived around 1906. This seems likely to have been on 25 June 1912 at the Church of St. Brigid in Baltimore. They owned their own home on 212 Hammonds Ferry Road from the 1920 census onwards.

They had the following children:

In the 1920s Michael worked as a labourer in the road industry and in 1940, at the age of 68, he was a miller labourer “working on his own account.”

In 1952 youngest daughter Claire, then single, accompanied her mother back to Ireland.

The record below shows them sailing back to New York from Cobh in August and September.

Michael DOOLEY died on the 14th May 1954. Anne died nearly 12 years later on 15th February 1966.
