Maria (Atkin/s Davis) & Richard BARRY descendants

Thomas BARRY

Thomas, like his father Richard and his mother’s first husband John DAVIS , was a cooper.

Thomas BARRY married 17 Jan 1900 at Ballymore to Anastasia CUMINS.

Later that year Anastasia died of eclampsia.  Patrick lost his wife and future child.

The widowed Thomas moved to Arklow Town, Co. Wicklow where he was one of a number of boarders with a Penston family on Main St. in the 1901 Census.

He returned to Killinick where it seems he lived out his days working in the cooperage.

There is no record of Thomas ever remarrying.

Thomas died 28 October 1942 but his death was not registered until 1943.

His death was notified by his sister Maria’s son, Richard WADDING. We can assume the delay in recording Thomas Barry’s death was due to his nearest family having emigrated to the UK.

We can see from Thomas’s probate that nephew Richard – the elder of Maria’s sons – inherited Thomas’s effects of £362.00. Richard was also a cooper, and like his uncle and grandfather before him, was to take on the Killinick cooperage.

Maria (Barry) WADDEN

Maria married a Patrick WADDEN on 26 Aug 1900 in Wexford, 22 days after her sister-in-law’s death.  Maria was 34 years old at the time of her marriage although her certificate reads 30.

Patrick was the brother of James WADDEN/WADDING. James was the husband of Maria’s older half sister Margaret (Davis) WADDEN/WADDING.

In the 1901 Census we see Maria with her husband on School St. in Wexford town.

This was a four roomed house with two windows to the front, classed as a second-class house.

Maria (Barry) and Patrick WADDEN had the following children:

1911 Census

As shown in the previous post Maria and her three children were living with her father Richard and brother Thomas in Little Assaly, Killinick.

There is no record of Maria’s husband Patrick WADDEN or WADDING in the 1911 Census in Ireland (or the UK).  As a shipwright could he have been away at sea?

A Patrick WADDEN, born 1866 in Co. Wexford received a WW1 Merchant seaman’s medal. With no other records of a Patrick WADDEN born around then it seems this is our Patrick.

Emigration

Maria and Patrick emigrated to Bootle, Liverpool where Patrick continued to work as a ship wright or ship carpenter.

1938 Kelly’s Directory of Liverpool and the Suburbs

Note: Patrick is known as WADDEN while son Richard, a cooper (like his uncle Tom BARRY and grandfather Richard BARRY), was known as WADDING. Father and son are very near each other.

Son William, a dock labourer, was registered at 112 St John’s Road in the 1939 Register.

1939 Register

Patrick and Maria lived with their daughter and her family at 102 St John’s Rd.

Curiously, it seems that daughter Maria’s oldest child, Mary Catherine, was living with another family at 30 Formby St:

Formby St is north of Bootle, and this may have been a decision relating to safety. Liverpool was attacked in air raids first on 28 July 1940. After heavy bombing of the Port of London in September 1940 Liverpool became the main transatlantic merchant shipping convoy port and took a pounding. December 1940, march and May 1941 were the worst months. Bootle was badly affected.

Patrick WADDEN died in the 4th quarter of 1939, in Bootle. He was buried in grave SD 723 at the Ford Cemetery. [1]

Maria (Barry) WADDEN died in December 1955, aged 90 years. She was buried on 29 December in her family grave, having lived at 69 Queens Road, Bootle. Maria died over 13 years after her brother Thomas and 55 years after the first of her half siblings deaths (Margaret, 1900).

Maria (Barry) and Patrick Wadden descendants

Richard WADDING

Dick, as he was known, inherited the Davis /Barry cooperage. He and his wife relocated to Killinick from Liverpool. The property is recalled as a ‘poor thatched cottage.’[2]

If you do a web search for ‘Richard Wadding cooper Killinick’ you will see a photo under copyright of Richard at work from 24th April 1944.

Coopering businesses fell away not long after and the Killinick cooperage closed. Richard worked for some time for Guinness in Enniscorthy before working at the Killarney tourist centre as a cooper and making barrels for the tourism market. He died in Killarney. [2]

Maria (Wadden) CUMMINS

Maria married a shipwright and they remained in the Bottle area. They had four children – one daughter and three sons.

Maria CUMMINS has living descendants.

William WADDEN /WADDING

William, a dock labourer, is documented using both Wadden and Wadding surnames.

His first child, William Francis, died aged three in 1940 and was buried with his grandfather in grave SD 723 at Ford cemetery, Liverpool.

William and Elizabeth had another son (who had three sons), and a daughter (who had two daughters).

Liverpool in WW2

The Wadding families lived near the Liverpool docks. It must have been a terrifying war. Liverpool was attacked in air raids first on 28 July 1940. After heavy bombing of the Port of London in September 1940 Liverpool became the main transatlantic merchant shipping convoy port, making it more of a target. Liverpool was repeatedly attacked. December 1940, March and May 1941 were the worst months. Bootle was badly affected. Across seven nights in May 1941 257 people were killed in Bootle, and 26 injured.

The Merseyside Blitz (1940-1942), striking Liverpool, Bottle, Birkenhead and Wallasey, resulted in 10,840 out of 282,000 houses destroyed and 184,000 damaged. A total 460 people died in Bootle, and 1,426 were injured. [Hodgson, D.L.1998. A merchant navy man’s story. Spectrum Print.]

[1] Ford is the Roman Catholic cemetery in Liverpool, located near Seaforth. See appendix.

[2] A great grandson of Maria (ATKIN/S Davis) BARRY has memories of Dick WADDEN. He knew Dick’s siblings had lived in Bootle, Liverpool and from that nugget I was able to find records on the family.
